Having followed Dr Emma Svanberg for a while on Instagram, I was quick to get my hands on “Parenting for Humans (how to parent the child you have as the parent you are”*. This book is like a breath of fresh air in the world of parenting guides, offering a whole new perspective on raising kids with love and sanity intact. Despite being a little longer in the tooth in this parenting game (my first daughter was born in 2006), there is still a lot to learn. So what did I think? Let me share my book review!
Dr. Svanberg’s approach is all about embracing the messy, imperfect reality of being a parent. She throws out the cookie-cutter model and encourages us to trust our instincts and find our own path. Who wants to live up to unrealistic expectations anyway? With her down-to-earth style and personal anecdotes, she makes you feel like you’re chatting with a friend who’s been through it all.
Books that can be applied to parenting have been reviewed before here, including the impactful “The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read” by Phillipa Perry. However, what sets this book apart is the holistic way she considers parenting. Not just how we were bought up, but the wider setting of our culture, our friends, family, and the macro issues of the world.
Dr. Svanberg’s focused on our well-being as parents. She gets that we need to take care of ourselves to be able to care for our little ones. She dishes out practical advice on self-care, setting boundaries, and finding support. It’s a refreshing reminder that we matter too, and we deserve some TLC amidst the chaos.
I also love that Dr. Svanberg backs up her ideas with solid research. She effortlessly weaves in scientific findings without making us feel like we’re reading a textbook. She explains how early attachment shapes our kids, why positive discipline is needed, and the importance of emotional regulation. It’s like getting the inside scoop on child psychology, without all the jargon.
One of my favourite aspects of the book is how inclusive and non-judgmental it is. Dr. Svanberg recognizes that we come from diverse backgrounds and face unique challenges. Whether you’re a single parent, part of a same-sex couple, or from a different culture, she’s got your back. She offers guidance on navigating societal pressures while staying true to who you are.
Now, I do have to say that “Parenting for Humans” covers a lot of ground, which might feel a bit overwhelming for some. It’s like an all-you-can-eat buffet of parenting wisdom. But fear not! Dr. Svanberg’s clear organization and straightforward writing style keep things digestible and engaging. You’ll be turning the pages with enthusiasm, ready to absorb more knowledge.
Unlike my usual book review blogs, I’m not going to share with you my main takeaways. One of the many issues of parenting is being overwhelmed by personal and often conflicting advice. Instead, I’m going to stronger you encourage you to read her book and follow her socials!
In a nutshell, “Parenting for Humans” is a warm and practical guide that puts both parents and children at the centre of the parenting journey. Dr. Emma Svanberg’s expertise and genuine care shine through, making you feel seen and supported. So, whether you’re a rookie parent or a seasoned pro, this book is a must-read that will empower you to rock the parenting gig with confidence and love.
