I don’t know about you but I really found my style after I was on my second maternity leave. The practicality of having to find maternity clothes which I wanted to wear (and heads up – you wear them a lot longer than you expect to) and not wanting to get lost in the role of “Mum” meant that I focused on the cut and colours that I loved.
In addition to that, I relished the freedom of not needing to conform to “work” clothes, so much so that over the 12-months period, my hair had shades of post-box red, sky blue and mermaid turquoise in it. There was also an accidental moss green period, but the less said about that the better!
Going back to work, you may have to put your “work face” back on, and that can be difficult after time away. You will have changed during this time; not just physically, but how you see yourself and the world. Talking practically, the clothes that you may have invested in before leave may be viewed differently when you are battling with a drooling, teething toddler!
I don’t claim to be a style guru; my main clothes shopping comes from Charity Shops and Ebay! So, I have called on the expertise of Linda Clark, from House of Colour (Lichfield, Rugeley and Cannock) to give a few tips and hints!
- Make sure that you wear colours which suit you – which complement your colouring, your skin, and your eyes. Even if you don’t feel great after a broken night’s sleep, they will lift your skin as well as your mood. (Clara’s note: I was very sceptical about colour preferences till I had mine “done”. I am not lying when I tell you how wearing the right colours can make it look like you have had a great night sleep!!!)
- Wear your make-up if you like to. Once you know what colours you need, you can do a 90-second makeup using a mineral powder, blusher, and lipstick. That’s it! The lipstick will clear your skin, make your eyes look brighter and their colour will ‘pop’, AND you can be sure of wearing one of those ‘wow’ colours right where it matters – on your face. (Clara’s notes; don’t feel guilty about spending time on yourself. You deserve it!)
- Once you know your best colours and personal style, all the items in your wardrobe will work together for you, so you will save both money and also the time in the morning when you are getting ready. (Clara’s Notes: I returned to work knowing how I wanted to be seen, not how I thought I needed to look. The confidence I had gained really knowing who I was shone out of my clothes! For me, it was vintage and retro styling that worked.)
- And finally – don’t spend more, spend smart. You can pick up bargains in sales, or from charity shops when you have identified the gaps in your wardrobe and spot something which fits the bill.
Mums and Dads, If you’d like help and advice on finding your best colours, and personal style, as well as on skincare, Linda would be very happy to share her wisdom.
