One way to find a career that you enjoy, not endure, is to retrain. I met this week’s Featured Client, Sally Campbell, when she was ready to relaunch her career as a Salesforce Consultant through Salesforce SuperMums.
It’s a brave step, but one that she has taken and is already seeing the rewards.
I am thrilled to share Sally Campbell with you!
I first came across Clara when I was going through a career transition. In pursuit of a new and more flexible career, I had left my job as a charity fundraiser in late 2017 and had spent the first half of 2018 on the Salesforce Supermums programme – a course designed to help working parents qualify and find flexible work within the Salesforce ecosystem.
As a part of the course, we were lucky enough to be invited to join Clara’s webinar on ‘Beating your confidence gremlins’. I was really impressed by Clara’s approach and felt it was the perfect time to do what I’d been meaning to do for ages: get some coaching. I wanted to launch my new career with fresh confidence and leave my self-doubting beliefs behind.
Clara helped me in so many ways!
Most practically, at a time when I was in a fairly isolated place – finishing off my studies and working out next steps, it was great to have someone to discuss my development with – to work out where I wanted to be, what I wanted, what I didn’t want! Transitioning careers can be a lonely journey, so it was great to have this support. Clara also has a great knowledge of different careers resources that I was able to draw on while I was figuring out my next steps.
It was great that Clara really ‘got’ the challenges around being a working parent and our discussions always included that element – we could plan my development and next steps within the context of what’s negotiable and what my priorities are for my family life.
Of course, I still get confidence wobbles, but Clara reminded me that it’s only human to feel unsure in new or uncertain situations – working as a freelancer in a completely new industry means there are going to be plenty of those! Instead of giving up, or thinking that I’m not good enough, I can draw on the work we did together to help me overcome set-backs and, importantly, celebrate my successes.
Clara helped me see that the answers are inside of me, that my default setting shouldn’t be to defer to someone else for the ‘right’ answer about what I should do.
I’ve been freelancing as a Salesforce Consultant with Emprisia Consulting Partners since August 2018. I am mainly working with their charity clients, which I love because it gives me the opportunity to put my previous experience to use alongside all of the new skills I’ve learnt. Freelancing is a whole new world to me, but I’m loving the variety, learning a lot about myself and drawing on the tools that Clara has left me with to help me climb the steep learning curve that I’m encountering. This time last year (actually a year to the day I’m writing this!) I’d left my job and wasn’t sure where I was headed. I’m now qualified and working in a new and exciting career and can feel really proud of what I’ve achieved.
If you are considering coaching, don’t go in thinking that your coach will wave a magic wand and create a new you – coaching will give you the ingredients, but you have to create the final dish yourself!
Be creative about the different ways you can tackle your own development in the time between your sessions, especially as a working parent with little free time – you don’t have to spend hours a week on it, but doing a little bit when you can (e.g. listening to a podcast or reading a short article on your commute) can help you feel that you’re making progress towards your goal.
But having said that, don’t feel guilty about prioritising time to work on the things that are important to you.
What great advice from Sally! I am sure you will join me in wishing her all the best at the next stage in her career. I can’t wait to see what she does next. If you want to connect with her, feel free to connect on LinkedIn or follow her on Twitter.
