We have all been there. Excited and motivated to make a change; to have a smooth return to work, take the next step in your career or get a handle on your work-life balance. Maybe you are investing yourself, or you have an employer who is providing the resource for you. So, you engage a coach or sign up for a course. Then, before you know it, you are postponing your sessions or removing your allocated training time from your diary. Why? Well, it’s simple. You are just too busy. You have too much on. That self-development time can wait. Well, today I’m going to explain why you are never too busy for coaching.

If you have worked with me as a 1:1 client, you will know that I keep a very close eye on the frequency of our sessions. I’m relaxed enough to go at the pace you need, but if I have noticed that we haven’t worked together for a while, you will get an email. And maybe a text. And occasionally a phone call. My first thought is always my client’s wellbeing; especially if it’s someone that has been booking in session regularly. Are they OK? But, there are occasions where there are apologies as life and work have got busy. New projects, new roles, growing responsibilities or unexpected changes means that the to-do list can grow. So often our own needs get placed further and further down the list. Ironically when life gets too much, too loud and busy, it is the perfect time to take some time out and focus on what you need.

It’s time to move past the internal voices that tell us that coaching time is not a priority; let’s work on reframing it. How would it feel if you called it something different? Define it by what you are going to do:

  • Thinking Time
  • Problem Solving
  • Mental Wellbeing Moments
  • Brainstorming
  • Prioritizing
  • Decision making

All of these are purposeful. The hour that you spend with your coach, guiding and streamlining your thought processes, creating a new perspective, insight and accountability, is a constructive use of your time. At the very moment that we feel our most alone, there is a real benefit to connect with someone who can support you to find an outcome. It won’t surprise you to hear that this happens regularly. A client comes with a balance, career or leadership related issue that has been distracting them from attended their regular coaching slot. By the end of the session they have a plan, and a new perspective in place, and they close our session stating “I wish I had just booked in with you in the first place”.

You may have heard the phrase “if you want something done, give it to a busy person.” I would like to rewrite that to become “if you feel like a busy person, you need to stop and take some time to plan.” The best way to get out of the stress cycle, and the feeling of relentlessness that life can create, it to rest, reflect and plan. And one of the best ways to do that, in my humble opinion, is with your Coach!

If you want to start your coaching process, then hop on a call to see how we can work together.
