When I share testimonies on my social media, you will see clients talk about the new roles, perspectives, and insights that the experience has given them. You may also notice that there are lots of references to their feelings; and how these have moved them into a more positive state. The impact of coaching on an individual’s mental health is something well-known within the circles of qualified coaches. We not only learn the “how” – the tools and techniques – but many of us also study the “why” – the science behind the improvements. Today, I wanted to share four areas that coaching supports, and how this can positively impact your mental health.

Before I share those areas, I wanted to stress something that I have raised before when discussing mental wellbeing and mental health. Coaches are not mental health professionals. There are times when Coaches are not the best people (at that moment in time) to support someone. That is why I make sure, as a mental health first aider, I have a framework to support conversations, my insight calls uncover the client’s situation and if I am the right person to support them. In my opinion claiming that coaching is a replacement for professional, clinical help, is not doing their job well, or ethically.

Coaching is future-focused, and goal-orientated; when a person feels mentally well enough (following a therapeutic approach), coaching is a great tool to move forward with. And I find, time and time again, that these four areas positively impact the wellbeing of my clients, irrespective of the reason they come to coaching.

  1. An improvement in self-awareness

Self-awareness is the cornerstone of personal growth. My clients often experience a significant boost in this area, which leads to better decision-making and improved relationships. During coaching, we explore their beliefs, perspectives, and identity, helping them understand how these shape their choices. This process allows them to build on empowering beliefs that support their aspirations

  1. Better understanding of their nervous system

Clients who learn to manage their nervous system experience more positive emotions, including happiness. Through coaching, we work to explore the science behind our fight, flight or freeze reactions, understanding where they be, and way to bring them back to what is known as their “window of tolerance.” This can involve new approaches, (for them) such as deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation. When clients are calm and centred, they are better equipped to handle life’s challenges and make sound decisions, not just in the session, but in life generally!

  1. The ability to break down bias

Coaching provides a safe space for clients to challenge their thought patterns and embrace new problem-solving approaches. We work on trusting their intuition, which research suggests is a sophisticated prediction machine. By interrupting mental shortcuts and reframing situations, clients open themselves up to fresh perspectives and innovative solutions.

  1. Supporting mindful goal setting with gratitude

Taking control of one’s life through clear, achievable goals is a crucial outcome of our coaching sessions. To really make this shine, coaching highlights the power of gratitude. Research has shown that practising gratitude can improve wellbeing, reduce stress, and boost resilience. I encourage clients to make it a habit to regularly acknowledge the good in their lives, no matter how small, and many of you will recognise the “Ta Da” list!

I don’t just know this professionally, over the past decade and more I have been coached and have found these areas improved in my life too! These are sustainable and long-term changes too; and after checking in with my clients, it appears it is for them also.

Have you experienced coaching? How has it helped your mental health and wellbeing? I would love to know.
