I’m a late starter when it comes to podcasts, having only really welcomed them into my life in the last couple of years; first as a guest then as a listener. However, during the period of lockdown they have become more than just an educational piece, they have become a bit of lifeline. So today, I wanted to share with you my favourite podcasts (and hope you will share some of yours too!)

I’m an academic at heart. I like to research and investigate, and I LOVE to discuss. However, over the past few weeks, I’ve lost my reading mojo. I haven’t really been able to focus and spend far too long aimlessly scrolling down my social feed, not really taking anything else in. I’m reassured when chatting in my two other book clubs I’m part of, that lots of us feel this way. It’s got that bad I’m behind my reading target on goodreads!

Having worked at home since late 2015, I have got used to not having the daily “water-cooler chats” about life and the wonders of the universe, but now we are safe at home, I had realised how I was still creating that in different ways. Conversations over coffee at networking events, catch-ups and chats at the school gates were scratching that itch. Now, they are on pause.

With all this in mind, I have discovered that podcasts are the way I can tap into what I need without dealing with the distractions of the world. As I am a self-confessed Luddite, so you can imagine my delight when I realised that my new(ish) phone has a podcast app. Yes, you may laugh but this was a revelation for me! So now, on my daily exercise, I have started discovering the podcasts that are bringing some intrigue, entertainment, and discussion into my life. If we are connected via my Facebook Group or LinkedIn, you may have seen some of my favourite episodes being shared recently. They not only inspire me, they have been a great reference point for the new podcast that I am involved in with the Nurture Community!

I have been wearing my multiple hats, metaphorically speaking, when listening to these podcasts; business owner, eternal psychology student, and mother, so they are an eclectic mix. Who knows what I will be listening to in a few months, but for now, here are my favourite podcasts!

Unlocking Us by Brene Brown
I think I have been very obvious with my admiration of Brene Brown and love the insight and humour that she brings into this new series. Like many people who are recording and releasing now, the global pandemic is being discussed, but it’s not the only topic and many of the insights provided will last beyond this time in our lives.

How to Fail with Elizabeth Day
I was introduced to this podcast through the recent book club book of the same name, and to date, this series hosts the best podcast episode I have listened to, to date, in relation to the pandemic. Whilst positively is great, hearing about what people have learned from perceived failures is just as motivational!

DIFTK: The Podcast

Doing It For The Kids is a collective of creative and entrepreneurial people who happen to be parents. The podcasts answers questions from the audience and range from “Work you can do from your phone”, “How to explain your job to your kids” to the very apt “Life right now”. About thirty minutes per episode, they are really easy to listen to. WARNING. You will laugh out load so pay attention to where you listen to them!

Selling to Corporate by Jessica Lorimer
As an experienced consultant and sales coach, Jessica breaks down the myths around selling B2B (that’s business to business for those who haven’t seen the acronym) and delivers it in a way that removes the barriers. This is really helping my focus my approach and gives me new ideas to develop my business!

So, if you ever see me walking around my local nature reserve smiling to myself, there is a VERY good chance I am listening to one of these! Are you a podcast fan? Join Creating Careers to Enjoy and let me know which ones we should be listening to next!
